    I myself can 100% relate to both hope & vanille because their stories combined with mine. Vanille deals with guilt Whilst hope deals with trauma & anger. Disagree if you want too, but nonetheless. It's just me showing off inside two characters. Excuse me for getting personal, however it's all true.

    Here's a funny *true* story: About half a year ago I was playing this brilliant game and then - for some reason - I had the thought: Wow, this game might be a little "problematic" in our times, I mean after all, there's a lot of effort being made to promote military service to young people, "cannon fodder" is needed for the Ukraine war and, in view of possible future expansions of the war, the military is to be made attractive to young people in many (western) countries. Anti-war media such as "Spec Ops: The Line" doesn't fit into the (political) concept at all. I was wondering how long it would take before that game was taken out of circulation - with a flimsy explanation ofc. This thought occurred to me, no kidding. And imagine, not even 2 weeks later the headlines were saying: "Spec Ops The Line will no longer be available in online stores due to expiring partnerships" DANG!!!

    I don't understand why people criticize a story for a character like Cid when abusive assholes exist in the real world.

    • @GameProf
      @GameProf 25 дней назад

      Very true! Including an abusive asshole is entirely valid, and it would be silly to criticize the story for simply including one. My issue, as I described in the video, is that the game doesn't seem to acknowledge how abusive he is. It sorta handwaves it, then resolves it with him deciding he loves her and wants to marry her, without ever really reckoning with how abusive he was toward her. THAT'S something to criticize a story for.

    • @GameProf
      @GameProf 28 дней назад

      Well you can't just leave me in suspense. What is it modeled after, then? Is there another energy source that's generated using reactors, and that famously creates mutations and sickness when exposed to it? The terminology, design, and lore surrounding mako is remarkably similar to nuclear energy, so I'm curious what you think that is supposed to mean if not to draw comparisons to nuclear energy.

    There isn't anything about racism in the game. Winglies and humans are two different species, not races. Winglies think they're superior because technically they are. They don't see humans as a lesser race, they see them as a lesser species. You can say its an allegory for racism, but I don't agree with that at all. It's like saying elves are racist against dwarves. Also, Giganto is a species, not a race, like you mentioned. Nothing to do with racism.

    • @GameProf
      @GameProf Месяц назад

      That's extremely pedantic. Like, I straight-up don't believe you're completely unfamiliar with the practice of sci-fi/fantasy using aliens and fantasy species as allegory for real-world race issues. You are right to point out that it's not the same issue, and this approach has a lot of weaknesses in nearly every use I can think of (including this one). But the game very clearly intends commentary on race issues through this, and "technically it's a species, not a race" iis insufficient to address that. Only to dismiss it. Now in all fairness, this video is old, and I don't think I sufficiently addressed the inherent weaknesses to this allegorical approach either. But straight-up denying that theme is even there because it uses an extremely old and well-worn literary device is a wild approach.

    • @johnnycaralta
      @johnnycaralta Месяц назад

      @@GameProf I'm not unfamiliar with it, and I'm not trying to say it doesn't exist in general. I'm saying it doesn't exist in the game, or in any Japanese media that I can think of right now. Granted, that doesn't mean it's never been used, but it's definitely nowhere near as common as in American and western European media. I think it's more likely you're just projecting your intentions onto the developers and writers. Would you say that the classic vampires vs werewolves subject is also an allegory for racism? Vampires almost always see werewolves/lycans as lesser beings. I don't hold that belief. I understand it's an old video, and it's pretty well made, along with being entertaining. Maybe I've just become jaded by the constant race baiting and propaganda about racism that's been forced down our throats for the last decade, but I just don't agree with your viewpoint in this particular instance. Thank you for making the video though. This has been my favorite game since I played it with my dad when I was 5 or 6. I love finding new content about it.

    I’m sure I’m not the first to say this, but I hope you’re considering a comparative review of the remake/rebirth project with the original. Even though Remake has turned out to not really be a per se “remake” of the game, I think it’d be great to go over how some of the changes either strengthen or weaken the themes of the original.

    I just finished this game for the first time and I still can't understand the love for this game from a gameplay perspective with it's excessive backtracking, lack of innovation, and other baffling choices. However, I can appreciate what feels like the best character dynamic and chemistry of any in the franchise. (I just wish I didn't have to halt gameplay and hit the "talk" button to get half of it) Having played through all of the 3D games recently, surprisingly, I feel like the movie tie-in game is the most fun to play, but this one definitely has the most enjoyable character dynamic to me.

    Your analysis of the video definitely allowed me to open my eyes in a different way to the story points. While not intending to debate it I took the Cait Sith death in the temple of the ancient differently. The death of the OG Cait was mostly symbolic, from that point forward Reeve works more with the party (being the last surviving board member likely made the plate evacuation easier as meteor fell as well) and less and less in line with Shinra up to the point of guiding the party during the tower raid on the return to the Midgar section at the end of disk 2. Now while Dirge and Advent make it clear that Cait is more of a intelligent drone in service to Reeve that still means Reeve gave the commands to change priority in the Temple. Keeping it in perspective to the OG game though it serves a second basis of being the fodder for a trope break. The return of Cait Sith 2 lets the player honestly believe that when Aerith is killed in the City of the Ancients that she could come back; maybe not immediately but that it might be possible. The drone's death becomes a double edged sword; one edge cutting away the former Reeve and allowing a new to come about, the other end pointed at the player as if to say 'You ain't seen nothing yet.' Moving from that, in Final Fantasy 9 the sudden tonal shift to nihilism on the third disk was rather jarring. Up til Bran Ball the theme seemed to be to be about finding a place to call home; a home that Kuja destroys just after Zidane found it to be a pensioned fruit. combine this with Necron not Kuja or Garland being the final boss and Disk four becaomes my least favorite part of the game because of the 'Pointlessness and futility of life.' It is possible I might be interpting it wrong; after all, my idea of that story not working was recently slapped down by Honkai Star Rail with a line from Jing Yuan ~"It may all be pointless in the end regardless if the only path that destiny leaves for us is the same end, but every path is different and every journey is worth taking despite this; it is the journey that defines us not the destination.'~ I again, might be reading to much into this. Either way I have rambled on to much and look forward to more of your videos. Hope you have a pleasant day.

    I actually think Hope was one of my favourite characters in the entire game. He feels very realistic because of the way he deals with his situation, if you watched your mother die before your eyes while also being caught in a battlefield yourself don’t actually tell me you’d handle it any differently to Hope. ESPECIALLY If you are just a lonely child who has just been forced to go along with some strangers to survive.

    The Nibelheim Flsshback is a brilliant example of using game mechanics to both tell a story and foreshadow the plot. Cloud, a SOLDIER 1st Class, is level 1 while Sephiroth is at least level 50. Am extreme difference between 2 SOLDIERs of equal rank, even allowing for Sephiroth's non-human origins. Cloud attacks Sephiroth by stabbing him in the back with the Buster Sword. How did he manage to sneak up on a SOLDIER 1st Class while carrying a gigantic sword? If you look at the Buster Sword's materia index, it's slotted with a First Strike materia. First Strike allows the player to enter combat from behind the enemy and attack first. Outside of Nibelheim, Red XIII/Nanaki is equiped with Sense and Poison materia when you recruit him. A nod to his animal senses and possibly the noxious conditions of Hojo's lab? Cid's limit breaks consist of basic spear thrusts, dynamite/fuse bombs, and misslefire from the Highwind. This reflects his gritty, no-nonsense personality, lack of spirituality, and his unenhanced baseline human body. Aerith's limit breaks are all supportive and mostly heal or shield the party... except for Fury Brand, where she uses her limit bar to max out the other 2 characters limits. Limit breaks are triggered by rage, so you can imagine her teammates probably just got a huge adrenalin high. Despite her aesthetic and healing powers, Aerith is not some immaculate vessel of purity. She has bite and here uses that bite to supercharge others. In Aerith's garden, Cloud finds the Cover materia. A ref to his assigned role as Aerith's bodyguard. Cait Sith is equipped with Manipulate materia. Manipulate allows the player to control enemies on the battlefield, implying Manipulate is how Reeve controls the Cait Sith robot, or its how Cait Sith controls the Mog doll. Its also a hint to Cait Sith's decietful motives

    Heavily disagree with your point that the player is the "evil" one. Its the devs who made the game with the intention to make others play such a game. Its a game after all, playing it feels like somebody wanted to make a movie but was missing the rescources for it. Spec Ops felt really boring and not what the horror of war is supposed to look or feel. Imo people put way to much thoughts on such a simple game.

    I do really enjoy the idea of Shauni being some separate spirit or being that was planted in Jade as a baby but roused from dormancy by the Domz monster under the lighthouse. Meaning it's Shauni itself that finally resigns to help Jade over the Domz entirely of it's own volition, the final scene being it revealing and lending it's power to her fully. It would add a lot of weight to Jade's actions if Shauni shared in her growth and explains perfectly why the power to ressurrect Pey'J surfaced at such a sorrowful moment for her. Jade didn't ressurrect Pey'J, Shauni did.

    • @Jukebocks

      Also the final boss theme being called 'Sins of the Father' works to imply that Shauni is the child of that Domz creature and is the one manipulating the priest figure at the very end once it dies.

      Then the funny thing is that Cod before wasn't even so glorious in its representation of war, especially in Cod 4 Modern Warfare and World At War, actually MW 1 also hid a very veiled criticism of the invasion in Iraq, with Nikolai who in a scene he explicitly tells Price that the Americans are making a mistake in invading Iraq to find Al Asaad because, according to him, they will never be able to take him alive, and in fact he was right. Unfortunately Cod became what it is from Modern Warfare 2 onwards paradoxically. Small fun fact: there are videos on RUclips where you can see the alpha build of Modern Warfare 2 and in this build you can see that the ending had to be completely different. In fact, in the initial plans, apparently, there was supposed to be a plot twist where it turns out that Shepherd, and other "American patriots", financed, probably with the help of the American government, Zakhaev's Russian ultranationalists to start the second civil war in Russia to weaken the nation even more, however Zakhaev has completely escaped the control of the Americans becoming a threat to the United States and it is from here that all the messes that can be seen in the first Modern Warfare begin, however all this was completely cut from the game and the developers also changed the motivations behind Shepherd's actions, making them a little more banal and linked more to a thirst for revenge due to the death of American soldiers in Iraq at the hands of Makarov in the first chapter

    • @Dr_Piscatella
      @Dr_Piscatella 2 месяца назад

      The reasons behind these changes are not known, there are those who think that the ending was changed on purpose under pressure from Activision for purely political reasons, or perhaps they must have changed everything simply because they were afraid that the game would become too controversial. Moreover in Modern Warfare 2 there was already the No Russian mission which caused a scandal

    I'll never forget when I first played this a while after it came out, and I was picking up on the main idea of the game was going for but not fully clued in. I was at the boat section proud to have survived the helicopter section but getting my pride hurt by being constantly killed. I was "locked in" to beat the challenge, forgetting any nuance or moral dillemas the game had brought up about my violent actions and just playing the game to see more of it, getting used to the sight of the loading screen after getting killed showing me that sandy boat and increasingly meta hints about gameplay and rapidly hitting buttons to get back into combat. When suddenly I die and rather than a loading screen a cutscene plays, showing a shadowy figure and Adam's voice screaming at me to "STOP! JUST FUCKING STOP!" When the game loaded back in I had to pause and actually stop playing to collect myself. I wasn't scared, but I was shook. Like the game literally paused to shake me out of the zone I was in intentionally. I began reflecting on what actually Walker was doing anymore in Dubai and finally picking up on the meta commentary that the real reason he keeps going is because I keep playing, forcing him to. Not many games have gotten me like that, and none to the degree of making me feel like a sweaty CoD fanboy who's missing the point and getting mad at a game like Spec Ops The Line.

    "The military does not condone killing unarmed combatants. But this isn't real. So why should you care?" This game, including the loading screen fucks with you.

    Here's how you look at it: Everything and everyone that happens from the moment Alan met the Dark Presence in the Oh Deer Diner was written into Alan's book "Departure", and none of it would have occurred, otherwise. This means that Thomas Zane and Barbara Jagger are characters that didn't exist at all until Alan wrote them into existence. Thomas Zane is actually Alan Wake inserting himself into existence under a different name the way Alfred Hitchcock would insert himself into his movies. Conversely, Barbara Jagger is very likely an alternate version of Alice Wake, representing Alice's dark side and her more negative qualities. Note that Alice and Barbara never appeared at the same time. In order for one to exist, the other had to disappear.

    Honestly something that has bugged me is the wuti war just I feel like does not add up because I don't see how a place like wutii can stand up to shinra. Wuti is shown to be a small village that I don't see how it has the ability to fight a war against shinra.

    You know what's funny the rufus parade music is literally a pardy or satire song on Japanese companies that apparently have thier own anthem for themselves that employees sing at work.

    Hello. I apologize in advance for using an automatic translator due to my lack of knowledge of the language. I don't often play shooters, preferring strategies and RPGs. But at some point I wanted to play a game with mechanics that were not so familiar to me in order to diversify the gaming experience. "Spec Ops: The Line" wasn't the first shooter I ever played, but it was definitely memorable for its message, which I never expected to get from a shooter. To be honest, I played it a couple of years ago and don’t remember everything. But I remember that during the process more than once I mentally cursed at the linearity that did not allow me to resolve the situations that arose, not as a soldier who had no choice, but as a thinking person who was free in his decisions. Being accustomed to RPGs, I often wanted to throw down the weapon and try to establish at least some kind of dialogue with those I was forced to shoot at in order to understand what was happening. And realizing that in a shooter such an opportunity by definition does not exist, I asked the question “is this opportunity possible in a real analogue of the situation?” In general, I will not retell all my attempts to resist following the plot. Let me just say that I quit the game after the helicopter crash with the thought that no matter what the developer was up to, I didn’t want to do it anymore. It felt like the game was forcing me to become a moral monster, without giving me a chance to resist it. Considering that I really don’t like being manipulated, I just gave up and didn’t continue. It was like violence for the sake of violence (albeit virtual), which, it seems, is what any armed conflict turns into. I think if there was a way to start a discussion of what is happening between the parties directly during the fighting, this would solve a lot without unnecessary casualties. But this is always hampered by fear and mistrust, treating the enemy as irreversibly hostile. I don’t want to say that this attitude is unreasonable (in fact, more than that, because the price of a mistake here is death), but it is precisely this that makes conflicts grow. Perhaps if politicians solved problems through mutual understanding and compromise, or at least independently participated in the hostilities that they provoke, thereby realizing the consequences, the world would be different. (I’m talking about politicians here because the principle “the end justifies the means” seems to be as inviolable for them as for soldiers caught in the meat grinder of war) But for some reason I have gone quite far from both games and literature towards reality. Perhaps all these (and not only) reflections lead me to one single thought. To the principle with which I would like to replace “the end justifies the means” in people’s minds. This is the principle: Fear, mistrust and misunderstanding are the only enemies of man today. And this is the only thing that a person needs to fight with today.
